McLaren is building an SUV, and the engine news buried underneath it matters more
McLaren Automotive confirmed a performance SUV on 16 September 2026, part of a £500m UK investment from L'IMAD, the Abu Dhabi government's investment arm, itself part of a wider £1.5bn commitment over five years. The money buys a second vehicle assembly plant in the UK, at least 1,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2032, and engine and transmission production brought in-house for the first time in the company's history. The SUV arrives before the end of the decade on a new platform with a McLaren-designed hybrid powertrain. Here is what is confirmed, and what we think it means.

McLaren McL 6GT: the first manual McLaren road car since the F1
McLaren revealed the McL 6GT at Monterey Car Week on August 14, 2026: a V8, rear-wheel-drive concept with a manual gearbox, the first in a McLaren road car since the F1 went out of production. It is a tribute to the M6GT that Bruce McLaren never finished, and it previews a production model due in 2028. McLaren has confirmed the layout and the hardware but released no power, weight, performance or price figures.
