Audi brought back the A2, and this time efficiency is the whole point

Rear-wheel drive, four power levels from 170 to 326 hp, three batteries, a 0.24 drag coefficient and up to 646 km. From €38,200.

The name comes with baggage, and Audi knows it

Audi revealed the A2 e-tron on 7 September 2026. The original A2 was an aluminium-bodied economy car that lost Audi money and gained a following, and the brand has picked the name up again for something that reads as a deliberate answer to it: an electric hatchback whose headline number is not power.

Efficiency first

The figure Audi leads with is 12.8 kWh per 100 km on the WLTP cycle, for the 140 kW car with the efficiency package. Behind it sits a drag coefficient of 0.24, which Audi calls the best in its compact range.

Range follows from that rather than from brute battery size:

  • 125 kW up to 423 km
  • 140 kW up to 515 km
  • 170 kW up to 646 km
  • 240 kW up to 630 km

The 170 kW car is the long-distance one, and it beats the more powerful 240 kW version by 16 km on the same battery.

Every one of them is rear-wheel drive, which for an Audi hatchback is the genuinely surprising part.

Only the 240 kW car goes past 160 km/h, and only it gets the 545 Nm motor. The other three share 350 Nm and the same limiter, which is another way of saying the range is about efficiency rather than about pace.

Three batteries, two chemistries

52, 61 and 84 kWh gross, or 50, 58 and 79 kWh net. The two smaller packs are lithium iron phosphate on 208 cells, the 84 kWh is nickel manganese cobalt on 192, and the big one is offered only on the 170 kW and 240 kW cars.

DC charging runs 100 kW on the 52 kWh pack, 105 kW on the 61, and 183 kW on the 84, for 10 to 80 per cent in 24, 26 and 29 minutes. AC is 11 kW throughout.

Money and timing

From €38,200 in Germany. Orders open in autumn 2026, and deliveries start in December 2026.

The size of it

4,324 mm long, 1,789 mm wide without mirrors, 1,548 mm high, on a 2,768 mm wheelbase. That is a low car by current standards, and the numbers explain the 0.24: a drag coefficient over a frontal area of just 2.38 m².

Boot space is 396 litres, or 1,336 with the rear seats down.
