BMW M builds its one-millionth car, and Munich will build the electric M3

The milestone car is a Fire Orange M3. BMW also confirmed where the electric M3 will be made and released photos of it in camouflage.

BMW M has built its one-millionth vehicle. The car is an M3 finished in BMW Individual Fire Orange III, built at BMW Group Plant Munich, which BMW announced on 2 October 2026. Peter Weber, head of the Munich plant, handed it over to Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH, at a ceremony on site.

"The one-millionth BMW M vehicle shows that these values are still very much appreciated by our customers, 40 years after the market launch of the first BMW M3," van Meel said.

The next M3 is electric, and it stays in Munich

The more important part of the announcement is about the next M3. BMW has confirmed that Munich will build the fully electric M3. BMW calls it the first high-performance model with BMW M Neue Klasse technology, and it will be built only in Munich. It will be the second Neue Klasse car made at the plant, after the electric i3.

That fits the plant's plans. From 2027, Munich will build only electric cars. BMW is spending around €650 million to convert it, including a new body shop and a new assembly hall on about a third of the site. The current M3 generation went into production there in 2020.

BMW released photos of the electric M3 in camouflage alongside the milestone car; they are at the end of the gallery. It has published no power, battery or performance figures. The power numbers going around online are not from BMW, so we are not repeating them. BMW's earlier look at M Neue Klasse technology was the M Concept Neue Klasse.

What it means for the petrol M3

BMW has said nothing in this release about the end of the current petrol M3. What it has said is that Munich goes electric-only from 2027 and that the electric M3 will be built there. We will update our 3 Series page when BMW publishes figures.
