BMW revealed the 2026 M850i Edition M Heritage, a 500-unit send-off for the current 8-Series line. It is sold only as the M850i xDrive Gran Coupé, offered in a single fully loaded configuration, and gets its own colour palette pulled from the original E31 that debuted at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show.
What is on the palette
The Edition M Heritage can be ordered in any of the five paints that appeared on the E31 at Frankfurt 1989:
- Bright Red
- Mauritius Blue metallic
- Cosmos Black metallic
- Oxford Green metallic
- Daytona Violet metallic
Daytona Violet is the one BMW is leading with in press photography. Every car gets an M carbon roof and 20-inch dual-spoke alloys finished in Orbit Gray, wrapped in summer performance rubber. M tricolour accent stripes run along the flank.
Inside
One spec, no options. The seats are BMW Individual Black Full Merino Leather and Alcantara with a diamond-quilt pattern. The headliner, dashboard, and upper door panels are Alcantara. M tricolour stitching runs across the seats, door panels, and seat belts. Standard equipment includes the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound system and the Driving Assistance Professional Package.
The mechanicals are unchanged
The Edition M Heritage is a trim exercise, not a re-engineered variant. Under the bonnet is the M850i's 4.4-litre TwinPower Turbo V8, 523 hp and 553 lb-ft, driving all four wheels through the eight-speed automatic. 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds. Same performance as a regular M850i xDrive Gran Coupé.
Production and timing
Production begins November 2025 with deliveries starting Q1 2026 in a small number of select markets. The 500-unit total is worldwide, not per-market. The reveal came at Monterey Car Week in mid-August 2025 and was formally documented in BMW's US press release the following day.
The bigger context is that the current G16 8-Series is on its way out. The M8 Competition also went out earlier in 2025 as a final edition. This Edition M Heritage is closing the book on the second-generation 8-Series, and BMW is choosing to close it in the same colours the first-generation opened with. That is unusually pointed for a mid-life farewell trim.
