RUF
Not a tuner, but a manufacturer that builds its own Porsche-based cars.

The story
RUF is the family-owned Bavarian firm that the law treats as a car manufacturer rather than a Porsche tuner. Its cars carry RUF VINs, not Porsche ones. Alois Ruf Sr. founded it in 1939, and it earned its place in history with the 1987 CTR 'Yellowbird', briefly the fastest car in the world. Today RUF builds its own integrated carbon-fibre chassis under classic 911 bodywork, in the SCR and CTR, alongside the mid-engined CTR3. Everything that leaves Pfaffenhausen is built in-house, with the raw, analogue feel the firm has always chased.
The founder

Alois Ruf Jr. took over the family garage in Pfaffenhausen in 1974, after the death of his father, who had founded it in 1939. He turned a Porsche service business into a recognised car manufacturer, most famously with the 1987 CTR 'Yellowbird'. He still leads RUF today.
