The car that saved the company. A mid-engine roadster built to a price, sharing its nose and interior with the 996 so both could exist at all.

The Cayman arrives and the argument starts: a fixed roof over the same mid-engine chassis, quicker than the roadster and cheaper than a 911.

Two turbocharged flat-fours replaced the six, the badge became 718, and the enthusiasts revolted. Porsche answered by putting a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated six back in the GTS, the GT4 and eventually the 9,000-rpm GT4 RS.
