BMW M3 CS Handschalter: the manual, rear-drive M3 gets a proper sendoff

Same 473 hp as the standard M3, 75 lb lighter, no automatic option, North America only. This is what a farewell should look like.

The 2027 BMW M3 CS Handschalter had its public debut on May 23, 2026 at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. It arrives with a spec sheet that reads like a rebuttal to the last four years of M-car product decisions: 6-speed manual only, rear-wheel drive only, North America only, and no power increase over the standard M3.

The spec

  • Engine: 3.0-litre S58 inline-six with M TwinPower Turbo, 473 hp at 6,250 rpm, 406 lb-ft from 2,630 to 6,130 rpm
  • Transmission: 6-speed manual. That's the whole point.
  • Drivetrain: RWD
  • 0-60 mph: 4.1 seconds (3.8 with one-foot rollout)
  • Top speed: 180 mph with the M Driver's Package
  • Weight savings: about 42 lb from dedicated lightweight measures, nearly 75 lb with the optional M Carbon Ceramic brakes
  • Base MSRP: $107,100 plus $1,350 destination
  • Production: begins July 2026, deliveries in fall, "very limited" numbers
  • Market: North America only

The angle

The "CS" badge in M's recent history has meant more power and more track focus. The 2024 M3 CS made 543 hp with an automatic and xDrive. This new one is called Handschalter, which just means "manual shifter" in German, and it goes the other direction. Same power as the base M3. Rear-drive. Three pedals. A weight-savings program instead of a power bump.

That's not what CS used to mean. It's what a farewell edition should mean.

What's actually different from a standard M3

The 42 lb of dedicated weight savings comes from a mix of small choices: exposed carbon roof and trunk lid, forged M lightweight wheels, thinner rear side glass, no rear centre armrest, reduced sound-deadening. The remaining 33 lb to get to the 75-figure comes from the carbon-ceramic brake option. None of it is revolutionary. It's the kind of grams-and-ounces program a manufacturer runs when they've decided the platform has one more chapter left in it and they want it to feel special.

Chassis-wise, the CS Handschalter gets M-specific spring, damper, and anti-roll rates already familiar from the outgoing M3 CS, retuned for the lighter rear-drive-only setup. The Active M Differential stays. The Adaptive M Suspension stays. The steering rack ratio is unchanged from the base M3.

The visual cues are restrained: gold-painted forged wheels, a small "CS Handschalter" script on the C-pillar, black kidney grilles with red accents, exposed-weave carbon interior trim. From ten feet away it's a well-optioned M3 Competition. From the driver's seat it isn't.

Our take

The G80 M3 launched in 2020 with the big grille, big everything, and a divided fan base. Five years later, BMW is walking it out with the version enthusiasts have been asking for since it debuted: manual, rear-drive, lighter. The fact that it took a farewell edition to unlock those three simple boxes is the actual story here.

The 473 hp figure will disappoint people who expected a CS-badged car to make CS-badged power. Read it a different way: BMW has decided this car isn't for the buyer chasing the last tenth to 60 mph. It's for the buyer who wants an M3 that shifts itself only when they tell it to, and slides at the axle they expect it to slide at.

At $107,100 plus destination, it is not cheap. Then again, this is the last manual, rear-drive M3 BMW will build on the S58 platform, and everyone in the room knows it. The next-generation M3 arrives on the Neue Klasse EV architecture. The three-pedal, gasoline-only, rear-drive M3 is a closing chapter, and BMW picked a good font for it.
