The one number that started this piece
On 22 August 2025, a Yangwang U9 Xtreme lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes 59.157 seconds. A month later, on 22 September, BYD unveiled the production car and stated its verified top speed: 496.22 km/h, set at ATP Papenburg. Four motors, each rated to 30,000 rpm. Combined system output of more than 3,000 PS. First production car built on a 1,200-volt electrical architecture. Production capped at 30 units.
Every one of those numbers is on a BYD press release. None of them are estimates. Which is why we're taking the U9 Xtreme seriously as the anchor point for a much larger story: China now has a top-end performance-EV cohort that Germany hasn't answered on paper, and in some cases hasn't answered at all.
A 1,200-volt supercar with a lap time that would have won the Nordschleife record outright in 2017. Built in China. Sold in China.
The U9 Xtreme itself
The Xtreme is not the standard Yangwang U9. The base Yangwang U9 is a quad-motor 800-volt car sold at 1.68 million RMB and already respectable at 1,300 PS, 0–100 km/h in 2.36 seconds, and a top speed of 309.19 km/h. It has been on sale since summer 2024.
The Xtreme, revealed 22 September 2025, is a different animal. BYD moved to a 1,200-volt platform to unlock the four 30,000-rpm motors, then paired that with the second-generation Blade LFP battery running at a 30C discharge rate. The rest of the spec sheet (peak kW, 0–100 time, kWh, range, RMB price, delivery date) BYD has not yet published in an English press release. On principle we don't publish figures we can't source to the manufacturer, so those cells stay blank until BYD fills them in.

If you want a sense of scale: 496.22 km/h is quicker than the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+'s official 490.484 km/h run, and 6:59.157 would have been a Nürburgring production-car record outright as recently as 2017. It's a hybrid Porsche 918 that clocked 6:57 for reference. BYD is playing at a level that until very recently was the exclusive province of Wolfsburg, Molsheim, and Stuttgart.
And it's not alone
The U9 Xtreme is the halo. It sits on top of a cohort of Chinese multi-motor performance cars that Germany's specialist brands are, on paper, no longer beating. Here is what we could verify against manufacturer sources.
Zeekr 001 FR — the one we all under-rated
Four in-house silicon-carbide permanent-magnet motors. 1,265 PS (930 kW). 0–100 km/h in 2.02 seconds with rollout subtracted, 2.07 seconds rolling. Top speed 280 km/h. 100 kWh CATL Qilin battery pack. Peak torque 1,280 N·m. Revealed 1 September 2023. Deliveries began October 2023. Production capped at 99 cars per month.
Sub-2.1-second 0–100 is Rimac Nevera and Tesla Model S Plaid territory. Zeekr has been delivering it for nearly three years, and most of the Western automotive press still refers to the 001 FR as if it were a concept. It isn't.

Xiaomi SU7 Ultra — the tri-motor sedan aimed at the Taycan Turbo GT
Three motors, 1,548 PS system output, pre-sale price 529,900 RMB. Xiaomi's global press pages weren't reachable during our verification pass, so we don't publish the widely-quoted 1.98-second 0–100, 350 km/h top speed, 93.7 kWh battery or 630 km CLTC range figures until we can pull them from mi.com or a MIIT filing directly. What we can say: Xiaomi is a first-generation carmaker whose tri-motor flagship, on price alone, undercuts a Taycan Turbo GT by more than half.

Nio ET9 — dual-motor, and don't call it tri-motor
Nio's flagship sedan. Dual-motor drive AWD. 150 kWh battery pack. Priced from 788,000 RMB for the standard trim (818,000 RMB for the 999-unit First Edition). The concept was unveiled at Nio Day 2023 on 23 December 2023; the production car and its final pricing were announced at Nio Day 2024 on 21 December 2024. Deliveries in China began March 2025.
One deliberate distinction: Nio calls the ET9 a dual-motor car because its two drive motors sit on the front and rear axles. The "SkyRide" chassis motors that some coverage rolls into a tri-motor claim are steer-by-wire and active-suspension actuators, not drive motors. A ~700 hp two-motor sedan is impressive on its own terms without inflating the config.
Peak power, 0–100, top speed and CLTC range are displayed as image graphics on Nio's product page without clean text figures, so we've held those cells pending the MIIT filing.

Denza Z9 GT (tri-motor AWD, Europe spec)
Denza is BYD's premium sub-brand. The tri-motor AWD BEV as announced for European launch: one 230 kW front motor plus two 310 kW rear motors, 1,156 PS system output, 0–100 in 2.7 seconds, 270 km/h top speed, 122.49 kWh second-generation Blade LFP battery with cell-to-body construction, and 600 km WLTP range.
The Chinese-market Aug 2024 launch specs that circulated (952 hp, 0–100 in 3.4 s, CLTC range) could not be sourced from denza.com or byd.com in this pass. Treat the Europe and China homologations as separate spec sheets and cite each to its own source.

XPeng G9 Performance — the one you can actually buy today
The most mainstream car on the list, and the one that most directly threatens a Porsche Macan EV or Audi Q6 e-tron on price. Dual-motor AWD. XPeng's stated output is "405 kW (551 hp)" — that's PS/metric hp; SAE hp is approximately 543. 0–100 in 3.9 seconds. 650 km CLTC range. The spec applies both to the original 2022 4WD Performance 650E/X (399,900 RMB) and the refreshed 2024款 4WD 650 Max (359,900 RMB). A further 2025款 refresh launched 13 March 2025 with a top AWD trim from 278,800 RMB and up to 725 km CLTC, though XPeng hasn't broken out the AWD power and 0–100 in the 2025款 launch press.

Nio EP9 — the 2016 quad-motor hypercar that started the story
Worth remembering. Four inboard motors. 1,360 PS / 1 MW combined. Top speed 313 km/h. 427 km range (Nio published the figure without specifying a homologation cycle — the number predates CLTC). Revealed 21 November 2016 at the Saatchi Gallery in London. Nürburgring lap 7:05.12 in October 2016, improved to 6:45.900 in May 2017. Nio never officially published a 0–100 km/h time; the number you see in most coverage (2.7 s) has no Nio-official source.

What the German brands should actually take from this
Three points. None of them "the sky is falling", but none of them "China can't build performance cars" either.
Motor count is not a moat. The Yangwang U9 is a quad-motor. The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra is a tri-motor. On peak power the SU7 Ultra outdraws it. Motor architecture is a chassis and torque-vectoring decision; power is a battery-density and motor-density decision. They're separable, and Chinese OEMs are making them separately.
Range figures don't translate. Every range number quoted above is CLTC or WLTP depending on the market the manufacturer homologated for. CLTC is roughly 30 to 35 percent more optimistic than WLTP and 50 to 60 percent more optimistic than EPA. A Chinese OEM claiming 700 km CLTC is not claiming 700 km WLTP. This trips up half the coverage in English-language press.
PS is not SAE hp. Chinese OEMs publish PS, metric horsepower. SAE hp is about 1.4 percent lower. When XPeng says "405 kW (551 hp)", the SAE-equivalent US spec sheet would print 543. Not a discrepancy; a units convention.

Every number in the sections above is on a manufacturer press release, a first-party product page, or a BYD Group official media release. Where a widely-cited figure exists in third-party media but not on an official source, we've left it out. If a reader has a primary-source URL for any of the blanks above, tell us and we'll update the piece with a credit.
But does the spec sheet actually win the argument?
There is a longer-running complaint about performance EVs that no lap time answers. Fast is not the same as fun. A silent car doing 300 km/h is a microwaved steak. It gets you there. It is not the same meal.
Mercedes-AMG is the most interesting evidence for why the critique might be right. Its shipping AMG EV, the EQE 53, wears a synthetic soundscape called "AMG Sound Experience". Journalists who have actually driven it call it "swooshy hums you usually find in sci-fi films" (Top Gear), and one review of the EQE 53 SUV rated the off switch as "a welcome feature" (Chasing Cars). That is Mercedes-AMG, the company that built the M156 6.2 V8 and the M177 4.0 twin-turbo, unable to make its own EV feel like an AMG.
The next thing from AMG is a serious swing at the problem. The C590 GT 4-Door prototype (the production version of the Concept AMG GT XX shown in 2024) ships with a simulated V8 note tuned specifically to imitate the naturally-aspirated M156, plus synthetic paddle-shift points, plus haptic resonators in the seats. First-drive impressions of the prototype are cautiously positive. Autocar's Greg Kable, who drove the 1,169 bhp car at Papenburg, called it "a decisive reset for AMG" and "a new level of feedback for a performance EV" (Autocar). InsideEVs, on a passenger ride, said it "honestly sounds great" and preferred the M156-inspired tone to Hyundai N's approach (InsideEVs).
Read those reviews carefully and a pattern emerges: the drivers do not defend the fake V8 as equivalent to a real V8. They defend the whole package (sound plus shift points plus haptic feedback) as the least-bad answer to a problem the segment has to solve. Sound on its own is not enough. The EQE 53's off switch tells you that.
Now look back at the Chinese cohort. Not one of the seven cars covered in this piece has a public counterpart to what AMG is attempting with the C590. The Zeekr 001 FR is silent. The Yangwang U9 Xtreme is silent. The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra is silent. The engineering war has been fought over motor count, discharge rate, and top speed. The character war has not started.
The verdict
Two questions decide this segment. China has decisively answered only one.
Can Germany match the specs? Probably yes. Porsche's electric platforms and the AMG.EA architecture are engineered to compete on power against exactly the Chinese cars in this piece, and the gap has been closing every product cycle. On paper, a Zuffenhausen or Affalterbach answer to the U9 Xtreme is a matter of when, not if.
Can anyone (Germany, China, or otherwise) solve the character problem for a 2,300 kg silent car doing 496 km/h? Nobody knows. AMG has taken the most serious swing so far with the C590, and even that is a prototype the automotive press has largely not been allowed to drive properly. The Chinese cohort has not, on the public record, seriously tried yet. The engineering war is in progress. The character war has not started.
The Yangwang U9 Xtreme is the opening shot on the spec sheet. The interesting question, the one that decides whether these cars matter in ten years or fade to spec-sheet trivia, is whether anyone builds one that people actually want to drive on a Sunday morning for no reason. Right now nobody is winning that fight.
